England captain Joe Root stated:”It’s always hard to leave guys out but Stokesy picked up a shoulder injury in the previous game.

“He may have the ability to bowl a couple of overs here and there but his batting is, as this series has shown, a gigantic portion of this side and he deserves to be from the team because a top-four batter.
“With that we’ve had to alter the balance of the side and Jason is the unlucky one to miss out.
“Jason has an opportunity to come in and play Test cricket and get a sense for it and it has not quite gone as he would have liked, but I am sure he will go away and work extremely hard and return again.
“That’s exactly what you expect of guys when they get left out. I’m sure he will have that mindset. Put himself back to the negative and he’ll want to prove a point.
“He is very aware of where he is at and what he needs to do for himself in the best location to perform in Test cricket.”
Australia – that kept the Ashes having a victory in Manchester on Sunday – will create at least one alteration using all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, in The Oval.

“The bowlers bowled a lot of overs [at Old Trafford] so bringing in Mitchell will relieve a good deal of the workload onto these,” said Australia captain Tim Paine at his media conference.
“It was a tough call on Travis, who has made a good start to his Test career, however we only want a bit more bowling thickness on what looks like a excellent wicket and to be able to look following big fast bowlers.
“Mitchell also includes two Test hundreds so we have full faith in him with the bat”
