Joe Cullen claimed his maiden European Tour title to defeat Michael van Gerwen 8-5 from the European Darts Matchplay final in Mannheim night.
The Bradford genius asserted the third-ranking name of his career in vibrant fashion as he conquered World Champion Van Gerwen with a confident and clinical revealing.
Having never won past the semi-finals at the European Tour, Cullen saw off William O’Connor, Glen Durrant and James Wade in the decider at the Maimarkthalle to book his spot on Sunday.
He demonstrated no nerves from the World Champion, starting the final and promising four of the opening five legs to transfer 4-1 up, including a 14-darter to split throw.
Van Gerwen responded in the first time, simply to watch power house as he started up a lead, a 170 voucher to bring the crowd to their feet.
Van Gerwen showed his class to measure the closing, but Cullen regained the edge to lead 7-5 – penalizing misses from the Dutchman to break – .
“To beat Michael in the final is excellent,” said Cullen, who dropped over 101 in the closing. “It is the greatest moment in my profession, it’s good.
“Michael is the consummate professional, he is so gracious in defeat and victory. Michael and me are great friends and I was congratulated by him wholeheartedly.
“It was only one of the weekends. We’re not Michael, that the stage is where we all play very well or perform bad and Michael has put the standard.
“I’ve been threatening to win a tournament for a little while and that weekend I thought I was going to win it. It was genuinely thought by it. I couldn’t find that anybody could beat me now.”
It is not long to wait till darts is back on Sky Sports, the World Grand Prix gets underway on Sunday, October 6 in Dublin’s Citywest Arena October 12 and seven days of coverage continues until the final on Saturday.
